What is KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.”

kybella-logoHow does KYBELLA® work?

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

Is KYBELLA® right for me?

Only you and your doctor can decide if KYBELLA® is right for you. If you’re bothered by submental fullness, or double chin, ask your doctor about KYBELLA®.

KYBELLA® is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you intend to get pregnant, then your provider may advise you to temporarily postpone your KYBELLA® treatments. If the target areas on your chin are experiencing any kind of skin infection, you may need to resolve the issue before your treatment session.

How can I prepare for my KYBELLA® treatment session?

Before your procedure, your provider will ask you about your medical history. It’s important that you provide as many details as you can about your health. This includes any medicines or supplements you’re taking, any health conditions you have, any allergies, and any facial surgeries you have previously undergone.

Similarly, you should inform the provider if you’re pregnant or planning to get pregnant. It’s not yet known whether KYBELLA® has any effect on pregnancy, but it is safer to avoid the risk.

Certain kinds of medications, such as ibuprofen, are not recommended before surgery. By providing your provider with a detailed medical history, you’ll ensure that your experience with KYBELLA® is safe and offers quality results.

What happens during a KYBELLA® treatment?

During your KYBELLA® treatment, your provider will apply a topical numbing lotion to the target area where the injections will be used. Your provider will mark the target areas on your chin where the KYBELLA® will be injected.

When the area is sufficiently numb, the provider will start delivering the Kybella injections. You may need anywhere between twenty to fifty injections per sitting. The procedure can last anywhere between fifteen to twenty minutes and is an outpatient procedure. There is very minimal downtime/recovery time.

After the KYBELLA® is successfully administered, it will gradually kill the fat cells in the area. They will be safely processed by the body. This reduces the size of the submental region.

Will I experience any side effects?

The safety profile of KYBELLA® is well characterized. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. KYBELLA® can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.2 These are not all of the possible side effects of KYBELLA®. Call your healthcare provider for medical advice about side effects.

How many treatments will I need?

You and your provider will customize your KYBELLA® treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, your HCP will administer KYBELLA® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered.
