BroadBand Light (BBL), also known as Photorejuvenation or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), is used to treat a variety of common skin conditions that are associated with aging and sun damage. It can be used to remove photoaging effects such as wrinkles, rough skin texture, and age spots. The procedure involves inducing controlled wounds on the skin. This will prompt the skin to heal itself by developing new cells. BBL is a completely non-invasive procedure. It can be customized to match the condition of your skin and the results your desire.

Some of the conditions that can be treated with BBL include telangiectasias (small facial veins), flushing and redness, hemangiomas (red spots), rosacea, brown spots and freckles, burn erythema, poikiloderma, pregnancy mask (melasma), dark circles around the eyes, enlarged pores, and liver spots. The treatment will also provide you with vibrant-looking skin.

The BBL Treatment

During a BBL treatment, light energy is used to target the blemishes. This will stimulate the skin, prompting it to rejuvenate itself. The light stimulates the collagen and elastin fibers. Collagen protein is what gives the skin its strength, and, along with elastin protein, it provides the skin its elasticity as well.

During the procedure, you will be given glasses or safety shields to protect your eyes. The BBL will target the areas to be treated. You will feel a sensation like a hot elastic band snapping on your skin. It is by no means painful. However, there can be some discomfort, so you may be given anesthesia. Initially, in order to gauge your response to the IPL, one or two pulses will be tried on your skin. It is observed for five minutes, and then the full procedure will begin. BBL is a completely non-invasive procedure.

Any part of the body can be treated with BBL. The face, chest, neck, and the back of the hands are the areas that are most often treated, as these are the areas that are most frequently exposed to sunlight.

After the BBL Treatment

After the BBL treatment is complete, you may notice a little redness on the area that is treated. It may be there for a few hours or a day. There is no downtime, and you can go home immediately after the treatment. Your plastic surgeon may give you some skincare products. Use them according to his instructions. This will minimize the risk of any redness or swelling and will quicken the healing time. You will have to avoid sunlight (UV rays) until you are healed fully. In a week or so, you will notice the improvement on your skin.

You may require anywhere from two to five treatments at four-week intervals. Your plastic surgeon will give you a better idea regarding the treatments. The results from the BBL treatment are permanent.

BBL has already become a very popular treatment, not only because it is very effective but also because it is a completely non-invasive procedure. BBL is very safe as well.
