Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job”, is a procedure to improve the appearance and/or function of the nose. Dr. Jeremy Silk is our rhinoplasty expert at Salinas Valley Plastic Surgery and considers the procedure to be one of his specialties.

beautiful woman with perfect smileThere are primarily two reasons for a person to opt for a rhinoplasty: aesthetic reasons and functional reasons. Aesthetic reasons include any corrections of a nose for appearance alone. Common issues are a nose that is too large or too small, perhaps with indentations or bumps in the nose. Functional reasons could be any number of issues in the nose structure making it difficult to breathe through the nose. Oftentimes patients may have both aesthetic and functional reasons for opting for rhinoplasty, and they can be combined. Generally, Dr. Silk does not perform solely functional surgery (such as a septoplasty) but is happy to combine these procedures when cosmetic improvement is also desired.

Rhinoplasty is a very individualized procedure. Every nose is unique and there are literally hundreds of small surgical modifications available to improve the appearance or function of a nose. The combination chosen is different for every patient, and Dr. Silk spends a great deal of time making sure each issue is properly addressed, both in the office and in surgery. Our state-of-the-art Vectra simulation tool helps define the new nose and make sure the patients will be happy with the plan.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people whose facial growth is complete.

Smoking is another factor to consider when getting a rhinoplasty. Smokers may develop skin loss, which is a critical issue for surgeries. Smoking may also weaken the body’s healing capability. Patients must refrain from smoking months or weeks before and after the procedure.

Lastly, the best candidates are people with realistic goals. Computer imaging can help create realistic expectations for appearance goals, allowing patients to achieve an attractive nose with only one operation.

How to Prepare for a Rhinoplasty Procedure

A rhinoplasty procedure will require the patient to be under general anesthesia. This means that fasting should be done to prevent the patient from vomiting during surgery.

Remove makeup and other cosmetic products from the face. The residue of these products may cause irritation during the procedure.

It will also be helpful to choose the right clothing on the day of the rhinoplasty procedure. This will make changing clothes after surgery easier. Button-down clothes are the most convenient option that will keep your nose safe while it heals.

Very specific instructions will be given when the patient is ready to move forward with surgery.
