Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure to improve the area around the eyes. With age, our skin loses it’s elasticity and the skin begins to sag. Some people also have fat pockets that start to bulge below the eyes as well. Having drooping eyelids and/or bulging eyelid fat can make people feel like they look older and more tired than they are. Sometimes the excess skin on the upper eyelids can also block peripheral vision.
Blepharoplasty surgery can be done on both the upper and the lower eyelids. In the procedure, excess skin is removed and fat may be removed or re-shaped to create a more youthful appearance. Upper Blepharoplasty can sometimes be covered by insurance if a visual field test verifies that vision is being blocked. Otherwise, it is considered to be cosmetic surgery. Lower Blepharoplasty surgery is almost always considered a cosmetic operation.
Blepharoplasty may also be done in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as a brow lift, rhinoplasty, cheek or chin implants or face lift.
