These days facial rejuvenation options are more numerous than ever. In years past men and women hoping to restore youth to their faces had but one option, the invasive surgical procedure Face Lift. Face Lifts are still the best option for people in more advanced stages of aging, but for people with minimal signs of aging or people who cannot afford the time, risk or costs of an invasive surgery, BOTOX® Injections and other dermal fillers are often the best bet.

In the years since BOTOX® has exploded on the market it has continued to grow in popularity. It’s easy to understand why. A BOTOX® treatment is minimally invasive, completely non-surgical, incredibly convenient, and quite effective.

In 1989, BOTOX® was initially approved by the FDA for the treatment of blepharospasm and other issues with the eye muscles. The FDA authorized the application of BOTOX® for the treatment of frown lines in 2002. The FDA approved it in 2013 to address crow’s feet.

How Does Botox Work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a muscle relaxer injected to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the face. This neuromodulator is composed of botulinum toxin type A, or more precisely OnabotulinumtoxinA.

By suppressing nerve impulses to the muscles, BOTOX® injections are able to temporarily paralyze contracted facial muscles. This allows the muscles to relax and lie flat, smoothing out the overlying skin. The treatment can also delay the development of new lines.

What Can BOTOX® Treat?

When used cosmetically, BOTOX® can treat the following issues:

  • Vertical glabellar lines between the brows, also called frown lines
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead wrinkles
  • Perioral lip lines
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Vertical neck bands

Botox was also approved by the FDA for treatment of various other medical issues, such as:

  • Oversensitive bladder
  • Excess sweating in underarms (hyperhidrosis)
  • Chronic and prolonged migraine headaches

About Botox

BOTOX® takes just minutes to administer, has minimal side-effects and the results last 3-4 months. Incisions or general anesthesia are not required. At the start of the treatment session, a topical anesthetic or icing will be used to numb the treatment area, helping to avoid pain and discomfort. A thin needle will then be used to deliver 3-5 doses of BOTOX®.

No recovery time or healing is necessary after a treatment session, and patients can return to their daily schedule. Slight bruising and swelling may be temporarily present.

Often BOTOX® injections may be done in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as another dermal filler like Juvederm or an Eyelid Lift surgery.
