Abdominoplasty — more commonly known as a tummy tuck — is a body procedure for patients who have experienced pregnancy, breastfeeding, and/or significant weight loss (either independently or through bariatric surgery) and are struggling to finish achieving a smoother, tighter stomach. Abdominoplasty at Salinas Valley Plastic Surgery Associates™ is performed by board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Matthew L. Romans and Dr. Jeremy Silk.
Abdominoplasty is a procedure in which excess skin and fat in the midsection are removed, and the muscles of the abdomen are tightened. This surgery improves the appearance of a protruding or sagging abdomen and reduces stretch marks.
Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are adults who are in generally good health, at or near a healthy body weight, and have realistic expectations about the results. Non-smokers, or those willing to quit before and after surgery, tend to have better healing outcomes. It’s also important that patients do not plan on future pregnancies since they can affect long-term results.
The operation often starts with liposuction of the upper abdomen to thin out the fat layer that will not be removed. Once the liposuction is completed, a low incision is made inside or near the pubic mound.
The skin and fat above this incision are then elevated off the underlying muscles. The belly button is left attached to the muscles but is separated from the surrounding skin. Next, the skin and fat are elevated the rest of the way up to the level of the lowest ribs.
When the abdominal muscles become loose or separated with weight gain or pregnancy, the abdominal wall can stick out. Once these muscles have been sutured closer together, the abdomen can lie flat.
The patient is then flexed in the middle, and the extra skin and fat are removed. The skin and fat up to the hole where the umbilicus (belly button) was attached are usually eliminated. Sometimes, we can’t remove all the way up to the hole, so the skin and fat are excised as far up as possible. If so, the hole is closed as a little vertical incision just above the main incision.
The upper skin edge is then pulled down to the lower incision and sutured closed. Finally, a small hole is made in the skin that has been stretched over the belly button, and the belly button is sewn back into place at its original level.

After abdominoplasty, you’ll need to follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions closely to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications. You can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the abdominal area, which will gradually subside over the following weeks.
Most patients can return to light activities within a few days, but getting back to regular exercise typically takes 6-8 weeks. Your final results will become visible once the swelling completely resolves, revealing a flatter, more contoured abdomen.
Many factors determine the cost of a tummy tuck procedure. The price of abdominoplasty depends on the amount of tissue removed, the time required to perform the operation, the techniques used, and other key factors.
