Chin Implants

Conveniently located to serve Salinas and Monterey, CA

A chin augmentation is a surgical procedure using chin implants to improve the balance of the facial profile and correct a “weak” chin. Chin implants at Salinas Valley Plastic Surgery Associates™ are precisely and safely placed by board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Matthew L. Romans and Dr. Jeremy Silk.

How Do Chin Implants Work?

Chin implants are designed to enhance the natural contours of your jawline by adding volume and projection to areas that may appear underdeveloped or recessed. The procedure is focused on creating harmony between your chin, nose, and other facial features to achieve a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing profile.

The implant is placed over the bone structure of the lower jaw, augmenting its dimensions. With different size and shape options available, you can widen or lengthen your jaw to create a stronger-looking chin.

The implant itself is typically made from solid silicone or other biocompatible materials that integrate well with your natural tissues. During your consultation, Dr. Romans or Dr. Silk will help you select the appropriate implant size and shape based on your facial anatomy, desired outcome, and overall aesthetic goals.

Would I Be a Good Candidate for a Chin Implant?

If you have a weak chin and would like it to better match your other facial features, a jawline enhancement with a chin implant may be right for you. Good candidates should also be generally healthy and have realistic expectations about their results.

Additionally, this procedure is best for patients who are non-smokers. Smokers must quit several weeks beforehand and continue to avoid smoking during recovery.

I have had nothing but excellent experiences every time I go to your office I let all my friends and family know about how great your office is. Thank you for making every visit great!

The Procedure

At the start of the chin augmentation procedure, anesthesia is administered to the patient. Dr. Romans or Dr. Silk then creates an incision on the inside of the mouth at the spot between the lower lip and the gums. A chin incision may also be an option.

Next, a pocket is made in the tissues so that the implant can fit snugly, and then the implant is inserted through the incision into this pocket. It is affixed in place. Lastly, the incision is closed with stitches.

Healing and Aftercare

The recovery process after getting a chin implant will involve taking up to a week off from work. Bruising and swelling are present, so it’s necessary to use an ice pack to reduce these issues. Patients should keep their heads elevated at all times to minimize swelling. No pressure should be placed on the chin until healing is complete.

Chin Augmentation FAQs

Yes, Dr. Romans and Dr. Silk frequently perform multiple facial plastic surgery procedures simultaneously to keep patient results consistent and harmonious throughout their treatment journey. Patients frequently elect to combine chin augmentation with techniques like rhinoplasty, ear surgery, and facelift surgery, for example.
Most patients cannot feel their chin implant once the healing process is complete and the tissues have settled around it. The implant integrates with your natural anatomy, creating a seamless feel that should not interfere with normal activities like eating or speaking.
Existing dental work generally does not prevent you from getting a chin implant, but it's important to discuss this with your surgeon. If you're planning orthodontic treatment, it may be best to complete that before considering chin augmentation surgery.
